Monthly Theme: Dogs
Who doesn’t love dogs? Dogs have been in my life as far back as I can remember; as my first memory of a dog was the time I was bitten on the nose when I was only six.
Many famous dogs have graced us with their presence, including, “Old Yeller” and “Lassie” (my dad called every dog “Lassie”). My favorite dog, who gave me a great deal of pleasure for many years, was “Marley,” my friend Pete’s dog. In fact, Marley was so special, Pete called on her to serve as his best man at his wedding. I held Marley as the vows were given at the service, and I will never forget how pleased Pete was with Marley’s performance.
The theme for August is dogs. In honor of and dedication to Marley, I have put together a CD of a variety of songs that pays homage to all kinds of dogs. I am giving my dog-owning friends/clients a free CD of these songs that I compiled. Hope you have fun and enjoy listening to the music.
To make the CD, I researched my song library and the internet and came up with 22 songs that various artists have written about or have used the word dog in their song titles. I chose the ones I liked and ones I thought best fit the theme. For anyone who asks, I didn’t pick any by Snoop Dogg, even though he had the most hits.
The songs get louder as you get into the CD. Wait till you hear the second half (hey, I do love rock and roll.)
The following are the songs I chose:
- My Dog and Me – John Hiatt – A down home song about his dog
- Old King – Neil Young - About his old Hound Dog
- Old Man Will Your Dog Catch a Rabbit –Leadbelly – Growing up, my family had an album of his we always listened to.
- If Dogs Run Free – Bob Dylan – This Cat can really sing. Oh sorry it’s a Dog theme.
- Kids and Dogs – Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young – A little mellow song. One of my favorites
- Dog and Butterfly –Heart – I’ve seen Heart more times in concert by accident than on purpose.
- I Love My Dog – Cat Stevens – Watch it on YouTube
- The Dog Song – Nellie McKay – I stumbled across this late night and had to have it!
- Seamus – Pink Floyd – Entertaining song to say the least
- Martha My Dear – The Beatles – About Paul McCartney’s English Sheep Dog
- Trashy Dog – Albert King - A blues instrumental from “The King”
- Wild Dogs – Tommy Bolin – Guitarist for Deep Purple, James Gang, died way too young. Colorado favorite in the 70’s
- Hound Dog – Elvis – “You ain’t never caught a rabbit and you ain’t no friend of mine”
- Big Dog – Lyle Lovett – Great stuff.
- Atomic Dog – George Clinton – A great dance song, I love “Funk music”
- Hey Bulldog – The Beatles – Relativity unknown song of theirs. From the Yellow Submarine “Soundtrack”
- Sick as a Dog – Aerosmith – I banned Aerosmith from my events and home/car for a year after they performed with Brittney Spears and N’Sync during halftime of Superbowl XXXV.
- Hair of the Dog – Nazareth – A huge song in High School. We loved the chorus…go figure!
- Dog Eat Dog – AC/DC – Bon Scott AC/DC, raw, loud and edgy
- Black Dog – Led Zeppelin – Named after an unnamed black dog that kept showing up during the recording of this song.
- The Dogs of War – Pink Floyd – Not meant for the weak of heart.
- Dogs running around and barking – Woof, Woof!
