The Makery Cake Co.
Desiree Kelly celebrated The Makery Cake Co.’s four-year anniversary on June 21. The idea of starting a cake company began while Desiree was working as a molecular biologist, attempting to cure melanoma. Her younger sister told her that she was getting married, and Desiree offered to make the wedding cake. She wondered how difficult this could be, since she had recently baked a cake for a picnic. Nevertheless, Desiree took a traditional cake-baking class to learn the basics, such as keeping the cake level. There, she discovered her hidden talent and started teaching cake decorating classes.
Desiree already had a full plate, between working full time in the laboratory, and attending evening MBA courses. She did receive her degree, but her flair for baking and decorating cakes took her career into a new direction. Many people enrolled in Desiree’s classes often mentioned that they’d like to go to a “make your own cake” place similar to “paint your own pottery” stores, because a “piece of cake” really isn’t very easy!
…So the vision of The Makery Cake Co. was born. A place where you can stop in any time to decorate a small cake, take decorating classes, have parties, or attend holiday workshops without the hassle, stress, or mess to clean.
As The Makery Cake Co. grew, more people enrolled in Desiree’s classes. The Makery now hosts an average of 60 kids a week, and they are learning something! How sneaky…Next she’ll be putting carrots in the cake…Oh wait…Desiree’s artistic talents, have led her to create 3D and extreme cakes. No one in Denver creates these designs.
The Makery Cake Co. has been featured on Food Network’s Unwrapped and Designer Wedding Cake-Off, Where in the Town is Gregg Moss, and Your Wedding TV. Additionally, the Makery’s staff won Kids Pages Best Places for Families 2008, came in 2nd place in Channel 7’s Alist for Best Wedding Cakes 2009, and received top 5 honors in 2008.
Come into The Makery. You can buy a fully-decorated cake, or decorate your own, similar to a “paint your own pottery store.” The staff hosts classes, parties, and workshops. Some of the more creative ideas emanating from cake decorating at The Makery are:
Horse Poo cake … You make up your own story…
Western cake with …an outhouse? Or a toilet. . .
